We are pleased to offer this Early Antique Hand Quilted Seven Sisters Quilt from Maryland circa 1850s for your consideration. The Seven Sisters Quilt is also known as Seven Stars and Seven Stars in a Cluster and is one of the earliest quilt patterns dating back to the early 1800s. As part of Nancy Cabots articles on quilt patterns in the 1933 Chicago Tribune, she attributed the Seven Sister Quilt design to the seven sisters of the Fowler family in old Virginia. The Quilt Engagement Calendar for 1981 by Clyrill Nelson included a picture of a Seven Sisters Quilt circa 1845. The Seven Sisters Quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted.

The Antique Early Quilt shows no machine stitching on the entire top, with fine and even hand piecing and stitching as well as quilting. There are approximately 15 to 16 quilting stitches per inch. The back of the quilt is ecru muslin and the seams are joined together with machine stitching to make it stronger. The quilt is heavily quilted in a fan design and is very visible on the reverse solid side of the quilt.

The edge of the quilt is of the ecru backing that has been rolled or turned over to the top of the quilt and hand stitched to approximately ¼ of an inch. This quilt was not made by a novice but a very skilled quilter as shown with the tiny quilt stitches and the precision of the complicated pattern where 6 pointed stars and angles come into play. Therefore the quilt most probably came from an affluent family.

The pieced quilted top is made of calico cotton fabrics and the backing is made of a heavy weight cotton ecru muslin. The antique Seven Sisters Quilt has a thin cotton batting. The fabrics are in incredible condition with a crisp cotton feel. The quilt was cherished and was obviously well taken care of, as shown by the excellent condition of the quilt being that of 175 years of age. The Seven Sisters Quilt is made of hexagonal blocks consisting of seven 6 pointed stars with each star representing a sister.

The calico fabrics that were used for top of the Seven Sisters Quilt were dyed turkey red, olive green, and off white. The calicos were dyed with vegetable dyes from flowers, roots, bark and herbs. You can actually see where the fabrics were made from different dye lots on the border fabric even though the calico print is the exact same.

The fabrics used are time and age appropriate. The six pointed stars are made of alternating turkey red calico and an olive green calico diamonds.

The off white calico pieces separate the stars and form the border of each hexagonal block. The Seven Sister Quilt is framed and finished with wide borders of the complimentary calico colors. All corners are perfectly mitered on all of the border strips. Mitered corners are not something you would see on a novice quilt. The artist quilter did not waste any of her prized bought yardage and you can see where she meticulously sewed two pieces of fabric to made one diamond to incorporate into her star pattern as seen throughout some of the piecing.

The motto of the time was Waste not Want not. There are tiny and small imperfections as shown in the photos, but not enough to be visible and seen on the quilt, due only, to the time and age of the quilt. This does not make this early rare quilt less valuable, as it is in mint condition, considering the age of this historic quilt being that of 175 years of age.

You will look long and hard to find such a rare exquisite early historic quilt with such workmanship and with an execution of such a complex design. The bold graphic quilt can be hung on a wall or used on a bed, and will certainly make a bright and bold statement. The quilt is large in size and fits the top of a Queen size bed with an inch or two of overhang. The quilt has been hand laundered by a professional without the use of chemicals and has a fresh clean scent. No bad odors or mildew.

The Antique Seven Sister Quilt is pristine and clean with very minor surface soiling as shown in the photos, which would be expected and normal for a quilt of this age. The Antique Quilt is in Excellent Condition without fold lines, as it was a stored flat. 78 Inches Long and 72 Inches Wide.
